‘2 Million Ghanaian Youth Remain Unemployed’ – Mahama Laments
About 2 million youth are currently unemployed in Ghana, President John Dramani Mahama, said today during his State of the Nation Address.
Contrary to assertions by the previous Akufo-Addo administration that they had created over 2.6 million jobs, hence significantly reducing unemployment in the nation, President Mahama says the youth unemployment rate his government inherited is deeply shocking.
According to him, “youth unemployment has led to despair and frustration. The latest estmimates show that up to 2 million of young people are unemployed. This poses a major security risk for our country and requires urgent attention”.
Nonetheless, he vowed not to let Ghanaians down, pledging that “I, John Dramani Mahama, I will fix the economic crisis confronting our country and reset it on the path of growth and prosperity”.
As part of the President’s measures to curb unemployment, he said; “To bring much needed focus to desperate and widely scattered youth employment programmes and to ensure stricter accountability in their implementation, I have set up the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment in furtherance to the promise I made in the campaign.”
This Ministry, he emphasized, “is mandated to formulate, coordinate and monitor policies and programmes to promote youth development and empowerment in this country”.
