93% Of Ghanaians Support Our Anti-LBGTQ+ Bill – Sam George

Sam George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and chief crusader of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ bill, says over 90 percent of Ghanaians are in support of the passage of the bill.

The bill was passed yesterday by a unanimous decision in Parliament; it however awaits presidential assent to become law.

The bill criminalizes every promotion, advocacy and practice of homosexuality.

Culprits will face a minimum of six (6) months to five (5) years imprisonment.

Though the international community have condemned the bill titled “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill” and appealed to the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, not to assent to it, Hon. Sam George is appreciative of the efforts by the members of the Legislative House and Ghanaians in passing it.

Speaking to the media, Hon. Sam George stated; “93% of Ghanaians support this bill and support the work that Parliament has done.”

He lauded the media for their enormous work and cooperation in seeing to the finalization of the bill.

“We couldn’t have gotten that 93 percent support on our own but for the work that you, the media, have done in projecting the ills and vices of homosexuality and projecting proper Ghanaian family values. We’ll continue to work with you to make sure that our children are protected, the innocence of Ghanaian children is not attacked and that our cultural values are upheld and respected.”

On the issue of infringement of human rights and suppression of the media in their reportage on LGBTQ+ matters, the Ningo-Prampram MP stated emphatically that the bill does not prevent the media from doing its j0b.

“The intent of the bill has never been to gag your chapter 12 right. We respect your rights to editorials but you and I all know that editorials are different from advocacy. And so your editorial rights to issues on the subject of homosexuality, issues on the subject of Ghanaian family values will continue to be protected by us as sponsors and the constitution of the Republic”, he stressed.
