We Don’t Respect Republic Day – Kwesi Pratt Fires Gov’t For Scrapping 1st July ‘Statutory’ Holiday
Kwesi Pratt, Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, has raised concerns over the abolition of the celebration of 1st July as statutory holiday.
1st July marks Republic Day on the historic calendar of Ghana.
The day used to be a statutory holiday but President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, after assuming office in 2017, changed the status to a commemorative day.
The Constitution Day (7th January) has been designated to replace the Republic Day.
But Kwesi Pratt, discussing the day during “Kokrokoo” panel discussion programme on Peace FM, called for restoration of the Republic Day.
He noted that the day marks a significant milestone in the history of Ghana, hence found it disrespectful that it is no longer statutory holiday.
“We don’t respect 1st July. We don’t respect Republic Day. Why? The day we became truly independent!”, he exclaimed.
To Mr. Pratt, 1st July must be retained as the big day for Ghanaians.
