‘Forgive Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’ – Opanyin Agyekum Pleads

Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly called “Opanyin Agyekum”, has appealed to critics of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, NPP Running Mate, and the general public to pardon him over his unfortunate comments about Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Opanyin Agyekum, speaking to host Nana Yaw Kesseh during Peace FM’s Thursday’s “Kokrokoo” show, pleaded that Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s comments may not have been intentional.
Delivering a speech at his outdooring ceremony in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 9, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh strongly opined that no President in the history of Ghana has ever worked to develop Ghana like President Nana Akufo-Addo has done in his government.
“Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”, he said.
These comments have aroused public agitations with Nkrumah’s party, the Convention People’s Party, calling for Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s immediate dismissal as Energy Minister and subsequent removal as NPP Running Mate.
“Failing which the party calls on His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to withdraw the Hon. Minister from his position as Minister of Energy, and also calls on His Excellency Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to withdraw him as his Vice Presidential candidate, for the sake of the country’s image, and its long term political and economic fortunes. Ghanaians and Nkrumaist’s worldwide, will have no choice but to hit the streets to register their displeasure if the above, or similar measures, are not immediately enforced within 24 hours.”
“As the popular saying goes, ‘one who puts on his armour should not boast like one who takes it off’, there is an election to be fought, albeit at the ballot box, and it would serve the sitting Government well to heed the voice of the people, lest their imminent electoral defeat becomes even worse than it is predicted to be”, a statement by the CPP stressed.
But Opanyin Agyekum has asked the public to cut Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh some slack, stressing he may have made those statements on the spur of the moment.
“Forgive him and going forward, he should watch his tongue”, he said on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show.
