SSNIT Hotel Brouhaha: Organized Labour Has Proven To Be Powerful – Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed has lauded Organized Labour for their intense protest against the sale of four hotels by SSNIT to Rock City Hotel.

SSNIT’s decision to sell 60% shares of its stake in the hotels to the Rock City Hotel, a company owned by Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong, was vehemently opposed by a section of the Ghanaian populace led by Minister for North-Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who revealed the irregularities in the sale.

The Minority in Parliament on Tuesday, June 18, embarked on a “Hands Off Our Hotels” demonstration in Accra, registering their displeasure with the SSNIT intended sale.

Organized Labour also threatened a strike action on Monday, July 15, but called it off because SSNIT has rescinded its decision to sell the hotels.

Commenting on the matter during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Atik Mohammed, a former PNC General Secretary, expressed excitement that the sale of the hotels has been revoked.

“This is the kind of Organized Labour that I want to see in this country; an organized labour that is powerful, that is willing to defend its membership…This is the kind of workers or worker unions I’d like to see; unanimity in action”, he stated.
