Do Everything To Maintain Trust – Opanyin Agyekum Advises EC
Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Professor Kofi Agyekum, affectionately called “Opanyin Agyekum”, has urged the Electoral Commission to do everything within their power to ensure the December 7 election becomes free and fair.
Contributing to Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Opanyin Agyekum cautioned the electoral referee against taking a position that doesn’t sit well with political parties, hence must do the right thing to maintain peace.
He urged the Commission to “do whatever it can to maintain trust” with the parties and Ghanaian electorates.
Opanyin Agyekum’s call comes on the heels of an IPAC meeting with the Electoral Commission where the Chairperson, Jean Mensa, took her time to clarify issues to the parties and welcomed suggestions that will help improve the electoral system before the elections come off on December 7.
Pertaining to the voters’ register, the EC assured Ghanaians that the inaccuracies cited by the opposition National Democratic Congress and that which the Commisison discovered by itself have been rectified, however it will make a second provisional register available to the parties to peruse and if they identify anomalies , they alert the Commission for correction.
“It is important to emphasize that the register in question is a provisional one. As its name suggests, it is provisional. Webster dictionary defines provisional register as a draft. It is not the final register. – It is nowhere near perfect and it is nowhere near final.”
“We are mindful of the importance of the Voters Register in an election. It is the bedrock of an election. Indeed, an accurate Voters Register is sine qua non to a fair, transparent and credible election. It is in our interest to produce a credible and robust final register and a transparent, fair and credible General Election. We did this in 2020 – we urge you to trust us to do it again”, Mrs. Jean Mensa emphasized.
