Operation Halt: Over 100 Soldiers Storm Galamsey Sites; Chanfan Machines Destroyed
Over 100 soldiers have been deployed to galamsey sites to tackle the illegal miners.
The deployment which is at the behest of the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is aimed at stopping the activities of the illegal miners and ensuring clean water and environment.
This comes following the President’s instruction to the Minister for Defence to “deploy additional military forces to intensify” the government’s ongoing “Operation Halt” aimed to curb illegal mining activities.
“The operation will be bolstered by the deployment of naval boats on polluted river bodies to ensure the immediate cessation of all mining activities, legal or illegal, in and around these water bodies”, a statement from the Presidency read.
According to a report by Graphiconline, the soldiers working in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), as at midday Thursday, October 10, had seized and destroyed ten chanfan machines.
