‘Schools Are Not Only Managed By Teachers’ – Prof. Joseph Osafo On Students’ Indiscipline

Prof. Joseph Osafo, a Senior Psychologist, has called for a collective effort towards disciplining students.

The Psychologist, taking note of the current unfortunate happenings in various schools involving violence, expressed that schools need retooling and other relevant resources to address such canker.

He explained on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show that schools must have counselling department and various behavior modification tools as part of their methods in dealing with their students.

Touching on one of the recent incidents regarding a KNUST student allegedly killing his girlfriend, Prof. Joseph Osafo believed this regrettable scene could have been avoided if the perpetrator had been well-checked by his colleagues and authorities in the University to notice he had anger issues and so neeeded help.

Going forward, the Professor advised that schools must begin to install strong counselling systems to reorient their students in line with the right standards of living.

“If you have a working school system that has supporting disciplines such as counselling systems and corrective disciplines like suspending students and the teachers efficiently commit to this, it will help a lot…Let us help our teachers; give them extra-training”, he asserted.

He also stressed that “schools are not only managed by teachers”, hence called on other relevant stakeholders to wholly play their roles effectively believing this will help to impact the students positively.

“Schools are not only managed by teachers. Let us not make such mistake. They are not only managed by teachers. Schools are managed by chaplains. It is also managed by teachers, managed by pschologists, managed by parents, managed by even alumni.

“Let’s hire more school psychologists. Let’s hire more school counsellors; let’s hire more school chaplains. Let’s open our schools to the alumni who are good examples to go back to the schools and be of help.”
