Don’t Remove Emission Tax – Gov’t Told

Atik Mohammed has dissented to the Mahama administration’s announcement to remove emission tax.

This was disclosed by Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson while reading the 2025 budget at Parliament on Tuesday, March 11.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the abolition of the following taxes classified as nuisance taxes:

  • Emissions Levy (or emissions tax)
  • Electronic Transfer Levy (e-levy)
  • Lottery winnings tax
  • Betting tax
  • VAT on motor vehicles
  • Insurance policy taxes

We will abolish the 10% withholding tax on winnings from the lottery, otherwise known as the Betting Tax; we will abolish the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) of 1%.”

But to Atik, it’s wrong to cancel the emission tax.

He wondered how the government intends to prevent greenhouse gas emissions by removing this tax.

To him, this tax must remain, stressing “I don’t agree with them on the emission tax. They have not given us enough basis why it should be removed and I don’t think it should be removed”, he opined on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show.
