Defamation Suit: ‘Falsehood And Character Assassination Have No Place In Our Society’ – Anas ‘Jubilates’ After Winning $18 Million Against Kennedy Agyapong

Renowned Ghanaian investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has celebrated his triumph in a legal tussle with former Assin Central lawmaker, Kennedy Agyapong, as a court in the United States of America awards the journalist $18 million in damages for defamation.

The court slapped Kennedy Agyapong with this fine following a unanimous decision by an eight-member jury in the New Jersey lawsuit.

Mr. Agyapong was found liable for spreading malicious falsehoods against Anas regarding the latter’s BBC documentary “Betraying the Game” aired on October 28, 2018.

Anas, in a Facebook post, was happy about the verdict, labeling it as a “resounding affirmation that falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society”.

“I stand before you today with a profound sense of vindication and determination. Yesterday, in the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey, an eight-member jury delivered a unanimous verdict finding Kennedy Agyapong—former member of the Ghanaian Parliament—liable for defamation and awarding damages of 18 million U.S. dollars…This decision is not merely a legal triumph—it is a resounding affirmation that falsehood and character assassination have no place in our society. It reinforces our commitment to building a robust democracy that serves all ordinary Ghanaians.

“This victory is especially significant for me because proving defamation in the United States is an exceptionally high hurdle, requiring clear and convincing evidence of malice. That the jury ruled unanimously in my favor underscores that Mr. Agyapong acted both maliciously and recklessly in his attacks against me”, excerpts of his post read.
