Govt Will Continue To Charge E-Levy But… – Tax Expert Says

A tax expert, Julius Gyimah has appealed to Ghanaians to patiently wait for the full implementation of scrapping the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) and betting tax as parliamentary approval does not take away the levy.

The E-Levy was introduced in 2022 by the previous NPP administration.

It was designed to impose a 1.5% tax on electronic transactions such as mobile money transfers, bank transfers and online payments.

President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress promised to abolish the tax and made it a huge campaign message ahead of winning the 2024 general elections.

In fulfillment of this promise, Parliament on Wednesday, March 26, passed a bill to abolish the controversial E-Levy.

The bill now awaits President John Dramani Mahama’s assent.

Speaking in an interview with Akwasi Aboagye on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Julius Gyimah explained that the fact that the bill has received parliamentary approval and when given presidential assent doesn’t mean the E-Levy is automatically removed.

He noted that Ghanaians who engage in electronic transfers will still see a deduction of the levy on their monies.

This, he emphasized, is because the E-Levy cancellation follows a process and will only come into effect after the processes have been completed.

He implored Ghanaians not to fight the mobile money vendors when they find E-Levy deductions on their transfers in spite of the parliamentary approval and presidential assent.

This notwithstanding, he assured the citizenry that no E-Levy will be deducted on any electronic transactions  after the government has done the due diligence.

“Parliament passing the removal of the E-Levy doesn’t mean the law has come into effect. It will take time, so we will urge people to note that when you do a transfer and E-Levy is deducted, it doesn’t mean the law hasn’t been enforced but it will take for its full implementation”, he stated.
