Bawku Conflict: This Is A Disgrace To Ghana And Politicians Stoking The Fire – Kokofu

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Henry Kwabena Kokofu has expressed his sentiments over the growing tensions at Bawku in the Upper East Region.
Residents at Bawku are currently living in fear for their life as some persons have resorted to violence using guns and other offensive weapons to inflict pains on others.
Dozens of persons have been fatally shot making Bawku unsafe for habitation.
Visiting the community, the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno pleaded with the aggrieved parties to lay down their weapons.
He promised to recruit them if they comply with his directive, stating “I am giving them the assurance that they should put down their arms. We have a lot of people in the police service now who came from this area, and we realise that they have helped a lot in the discharge of their duties as officers”.
“The assurance we gave to them was that ‘put down your weapons, and when it comes to recruitment, we will give you the advantage to participate, go through the normal process.’ I didn’t say anything wider to maybe shove the requirement, but it looks as if the media is reporting something different; they will go through the normal process”, he clarified.
The IGP has however prohibited his officers from moving around without protective gear and armored escort.
Commenting on the issue during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” discussion show, Henry Kokofu bemoaned the Bawku incidents and pointed out the violence is being fanned by politicians.
To restore calm and peace in the area, Kokofu warned the political actors to stop fueling the conflict.
“It is a disgrace to the nation and to we, the politicians, fanning the conflict”, he exclaimed.
In his concluding remarks, he acknowledged the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s role as a mediator to restore peace at Bawku.
