Nurses’ Strike: Go To The Hospitals And See How People Are Dying – Salam Mustapha Blasts Health Minister

NPP Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha has raised concerns over the approach adopted by the government in addressing the ongoing nurses’ strike.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), on June 2, 2025, embarked on a nationwide strike.

The association initiated this action, citing government’s failure to implement their 2024 Collective Agreement which involves better salaries, improved allowances and working conditions for the nurses and midwives.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh called on retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services stating “given the urgency of the situation and the suffering of patients, the government is appealing to retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services for a brief period, pending the resolution of the impasse”.

He added; “The Ministry will in the next few hours publish a comprehensive list of facilities to support affected centres where nursing services are lacking; so that patients can seek healthcare there.”

Reacting to the issue during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Salam Mustapha pointed out the impact of the strike and asked the government to find the right words to bring the nurses and midwives back to work.

“Go to the hospitals and see how people are dying”, he lamented.

To him, the way the Minister is approaching the issue including utterances by some political critics is fueling the matter.

He advised the Minister to settle the matter amicably saying “just talk to the nurses, show them some respect. Get them back to the wards. This one is too hard for the government to do”.

“They should sit up!”, Salam exclaimed while calling on the government to ensure the nurses resume work.
