We Won’t Accept Any ‘Filibustering’ From You Again – Minority Warns Afenyo-Markin Over Delay Of Anti-Gay Bill

The Minority in Parliament has issued a stern warning to the Deputy Majority Leader, Alex Afenyo-Markin not to delay the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill awaiting parliamentary approval.

Hon. Afenyo-Markin opposed the bill citing portions where LGBTQ+ community and activists are to face a jail term, arguing that imprisonment is not the solution.

“The issue before us is behavioral, and it is my humble view that in dealing with behavioural matters, incarceration is not the solution. It makes the matter worse”, he argued, adding “to jail a person for his/her sexuality will not be the solution in maintaining our Ghanaian family values and ensuring proper human sexual rights”.

“The essence of this motion is to afford this august house the opportunity to thoroughly consider amendments that are proposed in the bill with the view of substituting community service for incarceration”, he said.

But the Minority has cautioned him not to further delay the bill, stating “we should also be clear in our minds that we will not unduly always find a reason to postpone the progress of this bill to another day”.

They further admonished Hon. Alex Afenyo-Markin stressing “everything that he [Afenyo-Markin] has raised in his proposal, he took about an hour here speaking about it, but he keeps giving reasons why we cannot deal with it”.

“So we are giving him ample time to do the consultation because there will be no more filibustering after Wednesday”, the Minority warned
