A Sitting President Should Never Appoint EC Boss – Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea has kicked against the appointment of the Electoral Commissioner being left in the hands of the President of the Republic.

For years, the sitting President appoints who becomes the Head of the Electoral Commission.

Under the erstwhile Mahama regime, Charlotte Osei was appointed by then President John Dramani Mahama and became the first female Chairman of the Commission from 2015 to June 2018.

She presided as the Returning Officer for Ghana’s 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections and has been succeeded by Jean Mensa, formerly of the Institute of Economic Affairs.

Speaking on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”, Nana Akomea, the Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation (STC), has called for a review of the law that mandates the President to appoint the EC boss.

According to him, this results in political conflict, hence maintains that a sitting President shouldn’t be allowed to appoint EC boss.

“That law that says a sitting President should appoint Electoral Commissioner does not help. Because if it is in the era of the NPP or NDC and a sitting President is appointing the Electoral Commissioner, why will the NPP or NDC accept the person? So, the law itself provides conflict”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.
