AFCON 2023: Who Has Qualified, Who’s OUT & Who Is Battling To Stay Alive?
The final round of group games for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations are now underway.
All teams have played at least twice but only a few teams have managed to qualify for the knockout stages so far.
That means there is still a long way to go and plenty of shocks still on the cards.
Hosts Ivory Coast are currently outside of the top two after a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Equatorial Guinea as are the likes of Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria, Tunisia and Zambia.
The top two teams from each of the six groups will reach the last 16 as well as the four best third-placed teams, so there is a real chance that some massive names are going to be missing the knockout round.
We run down who has qualified, who is out, and who is battling to stay alive.
Who Has Qualified For The Africa Cup Of Nations Last 16?
- Cape Verde
- Senegal
- Equatorial Guinea
- Nigeria
- Egypt
Who Is Guaranteed At Least A Top-Three Place?
- Ghana
- Ivory Coast
- Guinea
- Angola
- Burkina Faso
- Mali
- Morocco
Who Has Been Eliminated?
- Guinea-Bissau
- Mozambique
How Does The Third-Place Ranking Work?
With just 24 teams competing at AFCON it is not just the top two from each group who reach the last 16.
As well as the 12 teams that will come from the group winners and group runners-up, there will be four more teams who finished in third.
Given that there six groups it will mean that two teams who finish third will miss out. Currently Ivory Coast, Namibia, Algeria and Zambia would qualify, whilst Ghana and Cameroon would miss out.
