Akufo-Addo Left Mahama GHC1.2 Trillion Wealth Plus $8.9 Billion Of International Reserves – Finance Committee Member Says
Dr. Gideon Boako, Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee and MP for Tano North, has sought to expose the President John Dramani Mahama and his government in relation to their 2025 budget.
The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on Tuesday, March 11, read the first budget of the government and highlighted some debts that the previous government has accumulated for the new administration among other things that have become an albatross around the government’s neck as resulting from the ertswhile Akufo-Addo administration.
For instance, in the cocoa sector, the Minister stated that the “cocoa sector which has long been the backbone of the Ghanaian economy is sadly on its knees owing to gross mismanagement” stressing “the sector faces declining output and financing challenges characterized by unsustainable debt, roll-over contracts and quasi-fiscal expenditures including cocoa roads which, Mr. Speaker, is non-core function of the Ghana COCOBOD”.
But to Gideon Boako, the assertion that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo mismanaged the economy is a fallacy.
Speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Dr. Boako disclosed that the Akufo-Addo rather left the Mahama administration a fortune.
“Ato Forson, himself, admits, in terms of the growth of the economy, Akufo-Addo left 1.2 trillion cedis. This is the legacy that Akufo-Addo has left Mahama. This is unprecedented!”, this, he said, contrary to the popular views that the current administration inherited a debt-inflicted economy.
He further emphasized that “when President Mahama left (in 2016), he left 219 billion cedis but today, Akufo-Addo has given President Mahama 1.2 trillion. Also, Akufo-Addo has left President Mahama 8.9 billion dollars of our gross international reserves but you say Akufo-Addo did nothing. This $8.9 billion covers 4 months of your import cover”.
