AngloGold Shooting: Put On Your ‘Thinking Cap’ – Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah Tells Obuasi Youth
Governance analyst and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Benjamin Otchere-Ankrah has condemned the shooting incident at AngloGold Ashanti in Obuasi.
Some illegal miners were gunned down over the weekend for trespassing the AngloGold Ashanti’s mine shaft.
The deceased and others who sustained gunshot wounds suffered such unfortunate fate due to a confrontation between them and military personnel guarding the facility, according to reports.
About 8 persons have reportedly died.
Commenting on this tragic situation during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” panel discussion show, Dr. Otchere-Ankrah expressed concerns over the behavior of the victims as well as the response of the Military.
To him, it was needless for the invaders to have gone into the AngloGold concession stating the Military is trained “to kill”, hence it was utterly unnecessary for the miners to have confronted them.
Although he doesn’t subscribe to the Military shooting the people and hoped the incident had been avoided, to him, the miners’ approach is condemnable and unacceptable.
He therefore advised the citizens, particularly the youth and residents at Obuasi, to watch their actions.
He asked them to put on their thinking cap, stressing “you have to be controlled by your head, not your heart”.
