Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill: We’re Surprised President Hasn’t Signed It Yet – Catholic Bishops

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has expressed shock at President Nana Addo’s delay in assenting to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to the Bishops, they see no impediment stopping the President from signing the bill into law.

There is currently an impasse over the transmission of the bill from Parliament to the Presidency as the President has halted the transmission, citing some court cases challenging the constitutionality of the bill.

In response to the President’s move, the Speaker of Parliament has also suspended the approval of new ministerial nominees similarly citing a court case.

This stalemate has aroused the agitations of the citizenry.

In an interview, Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, stated that a vast majority of Ghanaians are in support of the bill, so urged the President to discontinue his hesitation over it.

“We’re surprised that at this time the President has not signed it yet. People can go and make their cases anywhere, anytime but as to whether the President should listen to Supreme Court orders of some individuals’ presentations, before he assents or not we don’t know if the law provides for that.”

“When this law has come from the people and it has been passed by Parliament, I do not find any basis the President will stand on it and say he will not assent to the Bill.”

“We call on them to do what is law, what the Constitution provides because they are making all of us worried. This one is a novelty, that is why we are not sure whether there’s a provision for that. If there’s no provision why should the President wait,” Rev. Gyamfi, on behalf of the Bishops, expressed their worries.
