‘As I Remain BoG Governor, None Of The Banks With Their Licences Revoked Will Be Reinstated’ – Dr. Ernest Addison
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison has vowed never to reinstate the banks whose licences were revoked under the Akufo-Addo’s government.
Many banks had their licences taken away from them between 2017-2019 as part of reforms in the financial sector.
In an interview with Joy News aired on January 2, 2025, Dr. Addison asserted strongly that “as long as I remain Governor, none of those licenses will be reinstated”.
Dr Addison’s statement was in response to questions about the possibility of the incoming government considering the reinstatement of the revoked licenses following appeals by the shareholders of those banks but the BoG Governor argues that the licences of the banks were revoked to protect the financial sector.
He noted that this decision was made after thoroughly reviewing the institutions’ operations and also finding out a chunk of them were involved in risky investments and mismanagement of depositor funds.
