Bawku Conflict Is Destroying Ghana’s International Image – Nana Akomea
Nana Akomea has raised concerns over the lingering conflict at Bawku resulting in violent clashes among the residents.
The tension at Bawku has recently arisen with some of the residents engaging in war-like fights leading to the death of some people.
This situation caused the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to go to the community to intervene.
He urged the aggrieved parties to lay down their weapons and promised them recruitment opportunities into the Ghana Police Service.
“When it comes to recruitment, we will give the people of Bawku priority. We will give the youth of Bawku priority, and so for that matter, a special team will come here to do special recruitment for the youth of Bawku,” he stated.
He however received a public backlash over his comments with critics questioning why the IGP would give preferential treatment to people who have resorted to violence.
Responding to the criticisms, the IGP clarified his remarks saying “I am giving them the assurance that they should put down their arms. We have a lot of people in the police service now who came from this area, and we realise that they have helped a lot in the discharge of their duties as officers”
“The assurance we gave to them was that ‘put down your weapons, and when it comes to recruitment, we will give you the advantage to participate, go through the normal process.’ I didn’t say anything wider to maybe shove the requirement, but it looks as if the media is reporting something different; they will go through the normal process,” he emphasized.
Touching on this issue during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Nana Akomea, the former Chief Executive Officer of the InterCity State Transport Corporation (STC), described the Bawku incidents as seriously affecting Ghana’s international reputation.
“The bawku conflict is not only disturbing in Ghana but also it is ruining our internatinal image”, he said.
In view of this, he embraced the calls on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom, to mediate the Bawku conflict to ensure a lasting peace in the community.
He also suggested there should be an “all-inclusive approach” towards the restoration of peace at Bawku in the Upper East Region.
