Bawumia Has Not Distanced Himself – Dr. George Domfeh Replies Critics

George Domfeh

Dr. George Domfeh, a Research Fellow at the University of Ghana, has replied critics of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana, about his ongoing “Thank You” tour.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is currently on a tour to thank the New Patriotic Party faithful and the entire nation for their support and votes in 2024 elections.

However, he has come under intense criticims over his utterances during the tour.

One of the strongest critics is Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security under the Akufo-Addo administration.

Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, in an open letter, condemned Dr Bawumia for what, to him, is his attempt to disassociate himself from policies by the previous government such as the E-levy and the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) among others that led to the New Patriotic Party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

“Bawumia’s claim that he opposed the E-levy, a highly controversial tax policy, is inconsistent with his silence during its introduction and passage, despite public outcry and its significant impact on Ghanaians.”

“Dr. Bawumia’s ‘justification tour’ is a calculated attempt to rewrite his legacy by scapegoating President Akufo-Addo and the NPP for failures he actively contributed to.

“His inconsistencies, championing policies in power but disowning them in defeat and his disloyalty to the President and the party that elevated him discredit his credibility as a leader,” he wrote.

But to George Domfeh, these accusations about Bawumia are unfounded.

He explained during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show that the former Veep has never distanced himself from the previous government’s mistakes but rather his utterances when he begun his nationwide tour were addressing some erroneous impressions created in the minds of Ghanaians, particularly members and supporters of his party.

One of such erroneous notions is that the New Patriotic Party lost last year’s general elections due to Bawumia’s religious affiliation.

George Domfeh noted that Bawumia’s remarks that “some people said that they didn’t vote for us because our presidential candidate was Muslim…this doesn’t make sense. This is not the Ghana that I know” were to rectify the impression.

Replying the critics, Mr. Domfeh said; “I don’t share the opinion that some people are saying he is distancing himself from what is happening. I don’t share that opinion at all because I have followed his remarks on his tour. He has been talking about the things that the previous government did that wasn’t good which he never distanced himself from it.”
