‘Be Bold And Tell Us If You Can’t Reduce Our Hajj Fee’ – Muslims Hit Hard At Prez Mahama Over Delay In Announcing Hajj Fare

A group of Concerned Muslims has reminded President John Dramani Mahama of his promise to reduce Hajj fees to an appreciable level for Muslims in Ghana.

Ghanaian pilgrims last year paid 75,000 cedis to embark on the Hajj pilgrimage, a figure that President Mahama said was exorbitant, hence promising a drastic reduction when he is elected into office.

In a statement, the concerned Muslims said with about a month to the start of Ramadan and the Hajj season closing in, Ghanaian Muslims are yet to know how much fees for this year unlike their West African colleagues who have already paid.

“With less than a month to the start of Ramadan, we have noted with concern, the continuous silence and inaction of government, in announcing fees for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.”

“Pilgrimage to Hajj, as is well known, is a sacred exercise, which every Ghanaian Muslim dreams to undertake, and it is also a capital-intensive exercise, which requires adequate financial preparation and readiness, to fulfil this life long dream.”

The group called on the government to “urgently announce the Hajj fee, we also want to remind President Mahama and the NDC, of the political promise to the Zongo community and Muslims to reduce the Hajj fare “drastically” as pronounced by President Mahama.”

“Mindful of the fact that each Ghanaian pilgrim paid GH 75,000 Cedis last year, which President Mahama and the NDC described as exorbitant, we are looking forward to a drastic reduction, in fulfilment of the promise.”

Describing the delay in releasing the fee as unacceptable, the group stressed if the President cannot fulfill his promise, he should be ”bold enough” to tell Muslims so that ”we can move forward”.

“…if the NDC and President Mahama are caught up in a conundrum and cannot find the subsidy to fulfill the promise, as recent media reports have said, they should be bold enough and tell us the truth, so that we can move forward. After all, we have been funding our Hajj pilgrimage and we are capable of funding it again, in shaa Allah.”
