Charles McCarthy Commends Mahama For Suspending GH₵1 Dumsor Levy

Charles McCarthy, the Editor-in-Chief of the Hawk newspaper, has lauded President John Dramani Mahama and his government over the suspension of the implementation of the GH₵1 levy on petroleum products.
The GH₵1 levy on every litre of petrol and diesel was scheduled to take effect on Monday, June 16, 2025 but the government has withheld it.
Spokesperson and Head of Communications for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, Esq., announced the decision in a post on Saturday, June 14.
“The implementation date for the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), which would have taken effect from Monday, 16th of June 2025, has been postponed after consultations with stakeholders. A new effective date will be communicated in due course,” Mr. Rockson wrote.
Commenting on the latest development on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Charles McCarthy noted that this decision by government means Ghana has a listening President.
“We should praise the government for suspending it”, he remarked.
He further translated the government’s action as strength, hence lauding the Mahama administration for withholding the levy.
“If you are responsive, it is not a weakness. Rather, it shows that you listen to the citizenry…It demonstrates strength”, he added.
