Contempt Of Court: Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi Files ‘Stay Of Execution’

Ernest Kumi, Embattled Akwatia MP

A Koforidua High Court has cited Ernest Yaw Kumi, the parliamentary representative for the Akwatia constituency, for contempt.

Ernest Kumi, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is said to have defied an injunction barring him from being sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.

The court presided by Justice Senyo Amedahe therefore issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

As a result of this order, Mr. Kumi can no longer hold himself as MP nor engage in parliamentary business until the case is finally resolved.

As the nation awaits the outcome of the case, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, the former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie South and a lawyer, has provided an update.

Discussing the issue on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, affectionately called “CID”, disclosed that Kumi’s legal team has filed a stay of execution on the order.

“I can reliably inform you that his lawyers have filed a stay of execution as at yesterday”, he intimated.

Purposely refraining from giving further details as the matter is before the court, CID however hinted that the  lawyers will “move the motion on 28th of this month”, hoping after careful consideration of the facts, “the court might not come to that conclusion” of contempt.
