‘Daughter Of Murderer’ Brouhaha: What Did You Do When Lydia Seyram Was Called ‘Bloody Widow’?…Pure Hypocrisy! – Adomako-Mensah Blasts Speaker Bagbin

Afigya Kwabre North MP has berated the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for issuing a week ultimatum to one of his colleagues who described the Member of Parliament (MP) for Korle Klottey, Zanetor Rawlings, as “daughter of a murderer”.

The unidentified MP has been asked by the Speaker to willingly acknowledge his or her wrongdoing and come out to supposedly apologize or else he will be compelled to do so.

The Speaker condemned the remark as “unwarranted, unjustified, and deeply offensive”.

“The remark was made off-microphone from the Minority side of the House and it was an act of dishonour”, he disclosed and emphasized “such behaviour is unbefitting of a Member of Parliament and will not be tolerated”.

Speaker Bagbin also rendered an apology to Zanetor Rawlings, the daughter of the former President of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings, and the people of Anloland where he hails from.

“I extend my deepest apologies to Honourable Dr. Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings, Her Excellency Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, the family, the Chiefs, and the people of Anlo and Anloland,” the Speaker further said.

Collins Adomako-Boamah, MP for Afigya Kwabre North, finds the Speaker’s position on this matter “hypocritcal”.

He questioned this quick judgment call by the Speaker on this “daughter of a murderer” brouhaha as, to him, the same measure of seriousness should have been accorded the former Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, when the then Minority caucus, now Majority, openly displayed bold inscriptions of “bloody widow” in Parliament to spite her.

Though admitting that the “daughter of a murderer” comment came from the Minority bench which he is a member, he however lamented that, in the same House, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, had given an extensive address describing J.B Danquah, one of the prominent figures in Ghana’s struggle for independence and economic progress, as a “CIA agent” and “traitor”, to wit the latter betrayed his country.

Murtala Muhammed referenced this claim from Martin Meredith’s The State of Africa.

Collins Adomako-Boamah wondered why the Speaker has said nor done nothing about Murtala’s assertion or the Bloody Widow display, asking if none of these people have families and loved ones like Zanetor does.

“What sort of hypocrisy is this? Speaker says he has given who ‘one week’? The same day Murtala Mohammed, he called J.B. Danquah on the same day; he referred to him as a CIA agent, a traitor but the Speaker didn’t hear this. The ‘bloody widow’ has children; the Speaker Bagbin was the Speaker then. We had women from the NDC side to stand up to defend this statement but he (Bagbin) didn’t give any person an ultimatum because Lydia Seyram has no blood in her body, because she doesn’t have Chiefs in her town”, he fumed.

He stressed; “The same way bloody widow was unnecessary, daughter of a murderer was also unnecessary. I don’t support any of them but if you say you want to punish, you have to punish on the same level.”

Adomako-Boamah made this remark during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” flagship programme.
