Democracy Hub Demo: Police’s Only Resort If You Breach Public Peace Is The Court – Information Minister Backs Ghana Police

Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar has applauded the Ghana Police Service for professionally managing the Democracy Hub protest days ago.

Some persons led by Oliver Barker-Vormawor and others called “Democracy Hub” took to the streets of the 37 Military Hospital and acted in unlawful ways that caused the Police to arrest over 50 of them who are in their custody after court remanded them.

The protesters were apprehended after they disrupted public order by blocking roads to the hospital, playing football in the middle of the road, removing and throwing away the keys of a Police vehicle and engaging in other acts of vandalism.

The Minister, speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, was elated that the Police didn’t resort to violence at the face of the provocation from the protesters.

“I have so much respect for the Police Service because they don’t resort to violence and if they do, we will condemn it so that they will go back to the modus operandi where they engage, they dialogue and if they think that anything is happening that is untoward, they will proceed to the court”, she said.

She further stated; “We have moved from the times that the Police used violence to a time that they are more of a Service than a force. They engage. They wait; they allow you to have your way even in the face of provocation but that does not mean there is no consequence for any action in the country.”

Fatimatu Abubakar also commended the Police for applying the laws of the country.

“If you breach the public peace or you disrupt public order, the only resort left that the Police will use is the court. That is all; there is no other place and I am happy that they were resorting to the court than violence”, she told host Nana Yaw Kesseh.
