Dumsor Levy Brouhaha: Shut Up! You Have No Moral Right To Talk!! – Charles McCarthy Replies Minority

Charles McCarthy

Journalist Charles McCarthy has slammed the Minority in Parliament over their response regarding the suspension of the implementation of GH₵1 energy levy.

The levy was scheduled to take effect on Monday, June 16, 2025 but the government has suspended it indefinitely.

“The implementation date for the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), which would have taken effect from Monday, 16th of June 2025, has been postponed after consultations with stakeholders. A new effective date will be communicated in due course,” Spokesperson and Head of Communications for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Richmond Rockson, Esq., announced the decision in a post on Saturday, June 14.

But the Minority Caucus in Parliament has described this decision as evidence of a “chaotic and inconsistent approach to economic governance”.

In a statement issued on Sunday, June 15, 2025, the Minority Caucus  added that “this eleventh-hour U-turn epitomises a trial-and-error strategy and reveals a disturbing lack of stakeholder engagement before the passage of the law”.

Reacting to the Minority’s criticisms, Charles McCarthy says they don’t have the moral right to talk about the government and its decisions.

He argued that the Minority has no grounds to oppose the government nor speak about President John Dramani Mahama, referencing their inability to cancel the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy)  that was introduced by the previous Akufo-Addo government.

“The Minority has no moral right when it comes to this tax because…they had a clear opportunity in government not long ago, about eight months ago, that they should eliminate the E-Levy but they replied that they won’t remove it until the election is over”, he stated.

“Where is your moral right? Where lies your moral justification?”, he queried the Minority.

He stressed; “If you squander an opportunity and someone takes advantage of the opportunity, you bury your head in shame…You were full of arrogance and pride. You didn’t listen to us. You saw feedback as criticism.”

Charles McCarthy further rebuked the Minority telling them to “shut up”, asserting that“they cannot cry because they have inflicted more pains on us than any other person”.

Charles McCarthy made these remarks on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show.
