Galamsey: Don’t Declare Any State Of Emergency; It Won’t Work! – Allotey Tells Akufo-Addo
Bernard Allotey Jacobs has charged the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, not to heed calls on him for a state of emergency over illegal mining.
The President has come under pressure from some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and many Ghanaians to declare a state of emergency to stop the illegal mining (galamsey) activities.
Galamsey is a major bane of the country with it destroying the water bodies and environment.
As a result, the Ghana Water Company has warned of an impending danger saying “about Sixty percent (60%) of the catchment capacity is silted as a result of illegal mining (galamsey) compromising the quality of raw water. We are currently recording an average turbidity of 14,000 NTU instead of 2000 NTU designed for adequate treatment”.
Also, some Ghanaians calling themselves Democracy Hub took to the streets on Friday, September 20, in protest dubbed “Stop Galamsey” to register their displeasure with the government for failing to clamp down on galamseyers.
Responding to the calls on Nana Akufo-Addo, Bernard Allotey Jacobs, a former NDC Central Regional Chairman, told the President not to declare a state of emergency.
“Any declaration of state of emergency in galamsey areas won’t work”, he said on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show.
