Galamsey Fight: Let’s Remove Politics And Emotions – Sam Pyne
Mayor of Kumasi, Sam Pyne has asked political actors and groups to stop politicking the galamsey issue.
Galamsey is a bane of the country as the activities of the illegal miners destroy the water bodies and environment.
Due to the adverse impact of this illegal mining, certain unions like UTAG and Organized Labour threatened a nationwide action to compel the President to undertake immediate measures to stop the galamseyers.
Though Organized Labour has canceled their strike action after the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, promised to deal with the issue and outlined measures he is taking to address the menace, UTAG continues their strike.
Also, there are heated calls on the President to curb the menace with some people embarking on demonstrations to register their displeasure.
Responding to the calls, the President has instructed the deployment of Military officers to the galamsey sites.
“The President has directed the Minister for Defence to deploy additional military forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities. The operation will be bolstered by the deployment of naval boats on polluted river bodies to ensure the immediate cessation of all mining activities, legal or illegal, in and around these water bodies”, a statement issued by Eugene Arhin, Communications Director at the Presidency, said.
The Minister for Defence has therefore deployed over 100 soldiers to the sites beginning Thursday, October 10.
Commenting on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Sam Pyne called for a collective effort on the part of all Ghanaians to fight galamsey.
Suggesting ways to solve the problem, the Mayor asked the mining communities to take full responsibility of this operation to curb the menace.
He noted that the galamseyers have developed sophisticated ways of operating, hence noting that the fight will only be possible when the nation, particularly the mining communities cooperate with the authorities, to overcome this canker.
“Let us remove the politics and emotions. Let’s all unite” to fight it, he appealed.
