Galamsey Is Already Banned…How Do You Ban It Again? – Akufo-Addo’s Critics Queried
Ursula Owusu has replied those calling for a ban on small-scale mining as a result of galamsey.
Galamsey which is illegal mining has been an albatross on President Nana Akufo-Addo’s neck as there is currently a strong opposition against him for not being able to stop it.
Although the President is credited for putting his Presidency on the line to fight galamsey, the fight wasn’t successful and galamseyers continue to have the leeway to contaminate the water bodies.
This has made many people to doubt the President’s commitment to the fight, however there are incessant calls on him to ban all illegal mining activities two months to the general elections.
To Ursula Owusu, these calls are seemingly much ado about nothing.
Giving her submissions on Peace FM’s flagship programme “Kokrokoo”, she explained that illegal mining is already outlawed in Ghana, hence those saying the President should ban small-scale mining in reference to illegal mining are not being sincere with the issue.
“You can’t say we should ban illegal mining. It is already illegal; it is banned. How do you ban something which is already banned?”, she stated.
To her, the galamsey situation is the fault of the entire nation stating “if the President had all the support from us, maybe we wouldn’t have reached this stage”.
“…when he was doing it, there were some people who were going behind him telling the galamseyers to vote against him and that they will allow them to continue their work when they come into power. We saw it; we saw them. People who should have known better strengthened the galamseyers”, she added.
Nonetheless, she believes it is possible to curb the menace if only all political parties will commit to a public declaration and commitment to fight it.
