Galamsey Is Like ‘Genocide’ – Atik
Atik Mohammed has raised concerns over the illegal mining menace, locally called “galamsey”, that has become the bane of Ghana.
The illegal mining activities have polluted the country’s water bodies and environment.
Atik, speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, welcomed the Mahama government’s efforts towards clamping down on the illegal miners.
According to him, he was a “bit worried about the kind of inertia” that “was defining the actions of the government” but stressed that currently, “it appears there is some increased intensity in the fight and for me, that is welcoming”.
He likened galamsey to “genocide” stating this menace can decimate the population.
“If you look at the damage galamsey is doing to our lives, it will not be farfetched to categorize it as a universal crime. Galamsey could be considered as a form of genocide because it can wipe out an entire community”, he told host Nana Yaw Kesseh.
He asserted that “galamsey is a crime against the country. It’s a crime against the environment and all that, so they deserve no respite. Everyone involved in galamsey deserves no respite and the fight must be continuous”.
