Gertrude Torkornoo’s Dismissal Petition: Same Old Things At Play! – Charles Owusu Rebukes Mahama
Charles Owusu has raised concerns over the clarion calls and petitions for the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
President John Mahama has begun consultations with the Council of State in line with constitutional process outlined in Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution following the submission of three petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.
The petitions submitted on February 14 and March 17, 2025 alleged misconduct and abuse of power against the Chief Justice.
The President has further given Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo 10 days to submit a preliminary response to three petitions demanding her removal from office.
The directive was contained in a letter signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.
Discussing the matter on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Charles Owusu, the 2024 Nkoranza North independent parliamentary candidate, expressed disappointment in President John Mahama stating it appears he is repeating past condemnable events.
He perceived the President’s reset agenda meant he would do things differently, hence wonders why the same thing is being done under his reign.
Charles Owusu questioned the relevance of the press statement from the Presidency on the Chief Justice’s removal saying “if the President hadn’t made this public and the process had gone on, it wouldn’t have attracted all this noise and that is why the Chief Justice is right…because if it hadn’t been made public and forwarded to the Council of State as the process demands and the Council also invites the woman to listen to her side of the story, there wouldn’t have any issue.
“But in this case, we have issued a press statement on it to prepare our minds so that should anything happen, then the President will be absolved to say this was petitioned by some individuals. Who are those people because the letter didn’t mention their names? Have you heard this before? That I don’t know the people who have made allegations against me and then all I hear is I should come the next morning to respond to those allegations; how can you understand this? You simply can’t understand it!”
To him, what is happening to the Chief Justice is politically motivated stressing “this is motivated by politics. It is simply because our government is in power, she must go for us to appoint a new person. How?…It looks as if it is the same old things happening when government is being changed”.
