GH¢1 ‘Dumsor’ Levy: This Is Too Harsh – Nana Akomea Condemns Govt

Nana Akomea, the former Chief Executive of the InterCity State Transport Corporation (STC), has condemned the government’s 1 cedi levy per liter of fuel.
The energy levy, locally referred to as “dumsor levy”, has been introduced by the government to ensure a stable power supply to Ghanaians.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced this new levy in Parliament but it has since generated controversies.
Drivers across the nation have registered their displeasure with the levy, whining about how it will compound their plight.
To political opponents, particularly the New Patriotic Party, the new levy has come to replace the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) which was initiated by the previous Akufo-Addo administration.
The Mahama administration cancelled the E-Levy following vigorous campaign prior to the 2024 elections emphasizing the levy was a part of the reasons for the economic woes Ghanaians were facing.
Speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Nana Akomea questioned the logic in the government introducing a 1 cedi fuel tax when they demonized the E-Levy which was a 1 percent deduction on electronic transfers.
He also wondered how a government that promised to ease the financial burden on the citizenry would bring such a levy.
To him, it would have even been better if it was 1 cedi per gallon.
“The 1 cedi per liter is too harsh…The level is too high”, he lamented.
