Ghana’s Anti-Gay Bill: ‘The Smartest, Most Creative & Decent People I Know Are LGBT’…I’m Very Sad! – US Ambassador Speaks
United States ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Evelyn Palmer says she is saddened by the passage of the anti-LGBTQ bill by Ghana’s Parliament.
The bill, which was passed yesterday, awaits President Nana Addo’s assent to become a law.
When it becomes a law, every member of the LGBTQ+ community and activists of homosexual activities will face a minimum jail term of 6 months to 5 years.
But the US embassy in Ghana has asked Ghana to reconsider the bill stating it undermines human rights and is an abuse of the freedom enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
“I am saddened because some of the smartest, most creative, most decent people I know are LGBT. The bill Parliament passed takes away not only their basic human rights but those of all Ghanaians because it undermines their constitutional rights to freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of the press. It will be bad for public order and public health. If enacted, it will also hurt Ghana’s international reputation and Ghana’s economy”, she wrote on the embassy’s X.
