If You Remove Chief Justice Torkonoo, Does It Mean You’ll Win All Your Cases In Court? – Kabila Jabs Mahama

James Kwabena Bomfeh, affectionately called Kabila, has taken a swipe at President John Dramani Mahama for suspending the Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaba Torkonoo.

The suspension of the Chief Justice was announced on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, in a statement signed by the Spokesperson to the President and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

The action is in relation to a petition to remove the Chief Justice for which a committee has been set up to determine whether or not to dismiss Madam Gertrude Torkonoo.

“President John Dramani Mahama has, in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, determined that a prima facie case has been established in respect of three petitions against the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo,” the statement, dated Tuesday, April 22, 2025, said.

Reacting to this decision, Kabila cautioned the President against setting such precedent in Ghana if the latter breaches the constitutional provisions.

Citing Article 146 (10) which states that “where a petition has been referred to a committee under this article, the President may-(a) in the case of the Chief Justice, acting in accordance with the advice of the Council of State, by warrant signed by him, suspend the Chief Justice”,Mr. Bomfeh sought to find out where the President’s warrant to suspend Chief Justice is.

He referenced past comments by President John Dramani Mahama and some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that purported, prior to the 2024 elections, that the Chief Justice was doing the bidding of the former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party.

Kabilla asked if getting rid of the Chief Justice Torkonoo translates into the President and the NDC winning all their cases in court.

“If you remove Madam Torkonoo, does it mean you have changed all the judges in Ghana so that if your matter is so weak, so frivolous and you sent it to the court, you will win?”, he questioned.

James Kwabena Bomfeh gave these remarks during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show.
