‘It Depends On What Is In The Bill’ – John Mahama On Whether Or Not He’ll Sign Anti-LGBTQ Bill

John Dramani MahamaFormer President and NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama has declared his stance on the anti-LGBTQ bill awaiting presidential assent to become law.

The family value bill which is aimed at strenghtening Ghana’s cultural and moral values and prohibit homosexual practices received parliamentary approval but the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, hasn’t appended his signature to the bill because some persons have raised legal consequences.

However, the bill has become an albatross on the President’s neck as opposition members, particularly of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), mounted pressure on him to sign the bill.

In a recent exclusive interview on BBC, John Mahama was asked to express his take on anti-LGBTQ bill.

Giving his reply, Mr. Mahama noted the bill “is against  our culture; I mean African culture. It’s against our religious faith, Muslim and Christian and all that but I think that we must look at the bill and the President must indicate what he finds wrong with that bill and send the bill back to Parliament or alternatively he must send it to the Council of State and get the Council of State’s advice”.

Asked if he will sign the anti-LGBTQ bill into law if he becomes President, Mr. Mahama responded; “It depends on what is in the bill.”a
