It’s A Blatant Violation Of Ghana’s Law To Deport Chinese ‘Galamsey’ Miners – Atik Deflates Muntaka’s Conviction

Atik Mohammed

Atik Mohammed, a socio-economic analyst, has kicked against the Minister of the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka’s resolve to deport Chinese illegal miners.

The Minister was reported to have said that investigations by the security agencies have uncovered criminal networks involving some foreign nationals who operate in Ghana’s forests.

“What we found, the kind of activities that were purely destroying citizens around the world, using a system that is set up, that was so sophisticated. Many of them are into our forests. Many of them are cutting our trees unlawfully. Others are involved in galamsey activities. And many, many other crimes,” Muntaka said.

He emphasized that “for these two crimes, when we arrest any foreigner, we are not interested in prosecuting him. Our first option is to take them back to their country”.

The Minister disclosed that 107 foreigners have been deported since he assumed office.

But to Atik, the Minister’s decision to deport the foreign nationals, primarily the Chinese, engaging in illegal mining is a blow in the face of the law.

“It is a clear violation of the law to opt for deportation instead of trial or prosecution”, he remarked on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show.

He further noted that “the fight against galamsey is a fight for common survival”, hence called for stricter action to be taken against the illegal miners.
