July 1 ‘Republic Holiday’: It’s Like We’re In Era Of Committees…Everytime; Committee, Committee, Committee, why? – Vincent Ekow Assafuah Slams Mahama

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, a former Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, has raised concerns about President John Mahama’s approach in re-establishing July 1 as a statutory public holiday.
President John Mahama has announced plans to reinstate July 1 to restore its significance as Republic Day and Senior Citizens’ Day.
He has further proposed the holiday should also be observed as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, allowing Ghanaians to reflect and express gratitude for the nation’s progress.
“We will have the opportunity soon as a nation to pray and give thanks to the Almighty God, as enjoined by the Holy Book that says, ‘In all things, give thanks’”, President Mahama stated.
The President also noted that he will set up a Committee to plan the day.
“We will thank God for His beautiful blessings on our nation, Ghana, and I will soon announce a planning committee made up of religious leaders to plan the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.”
But Vincent Assafuah, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has vehemently dissented to the President’s proposal.
To him, it looks like the President’s administration is all about setting up Committees.
Hon. Assafuah found no relevance with setting up a Committee to announce a statutory public holiday and a national prayer day.
“It looks as if we are in an era of Committees. The little opportunity, then they will form Committees. It’s as if His Excellency the President, President Mahama, himself, does not know how to do or go about his promises”, he slammed Mahama.
He also asked “won’t we use taxpayers’ money to pay the members of the Committee? Do you really need a Committee to plan how we can set a public holiday?”
He as well referenced the Mahama government establishing a 22-member Committee to form the Ghana Gold Board to manage the country’s gold sector.
To Vincent Assafuah, Mahama is simply using some means to “create job for his boys” as he argued “this (Gold Board) is a board I think six or seven people can do”.
The MP made these comments on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show.
