New BoG Governor’s Trial: Duffour, Kofi Amoabeng Are Still In Court; Why Exempt Asiamah? – Gideon Boako Jabs Mahama

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North, Dr Gideon Boako has, on behalf of the Minority in Parliament, called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the legal suit against the newly appointed Governor of Bank of Ghana resumes.

Dr. Gideon Boako found it distasteful the President’s decision of dropping the charges against Dr. Johnson Asiamah and appointing him to head the Central Bank.

Speaking on “Kokrokoo” morning show on Peace FM, he alluded to Dr. Asiamah’s case pending in court whereby he has been charged with financial-related crimes.

Dr. Gideon Boako explained that the President, upon appointing the new Governor, had subsequently dropped the charges.

He also narrated that Dr. Asiamah was jointly sued with former Finance Minister, Dr. Kwabena Duffour, Dr. Kofi Amoabeng, Chief Executive of the defunct UT Bank and two others.

He therefore wonders why Asiamah should be left off the hook while the others continue to stand trial.

To him, the minority seeks for Asiamah’s case to be dealt with conclusively saying “just as the four persons including Kwabena Duffour, Amoabeng of UT Bank, have their cases pending in court, we sent them together with Asiamah to court, it behoves President Mahama to allow Asiamah’s case to continue in court…and if the court acquits him, then we all can have the hope and guarantee that the person who is in charge of Ghana’s purse is innocent”.

He further shared other benefits of President John Mahama allowing Dr. Asiamah’s court case to continue and if proven innocent, he  stressed will help “foreign investors, the World Bank, IMF and other international financial corporations and donor countries to have the assurance the credibility and reputational integrity of the Governor is intact”.

Meanwhile, the Minority has admonished Dr. Johnson Asiamah to refrain from engaging in any activities at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) until his nomination as the Governor is approved by the Council of State.

The Minority, at a press conference on Wednesday, 5th February, questioned the implications of Dr. Asiamah assuming the role of Governor before the Council of State has had the opportunity to approve his nomination.
