Nothing ‘Unique’ About Fitch Solutions’ Survey That NDC May Win 2024 Elections – Prof. Smart Sarpong
Senior Researcher, Professor Smart Sarpong has implored Ghana to empower her local researchers and equip them to conduct reliable surveys.
His call comes on the back of a study by Fitch Solutions that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is likely to win this year’s general elections.
According to the London-based research and data firm, the December 7 elections may tilt in favor of the NDC due to the economic crises confronting Ghanaians.
“We believe that the opposition NDC has a stronger chance of winning the upcoming general elections compared to the ruling NPP. Recent polls consistently place the NDC ahead with the most recent survey showing 54 % of respondents favoring the NDC.
“In addition, multiple surveys have shown that economic management and job creation are going to be the most important issues during the election for voters which we believe will put the ruling NPP at a disadvantage given the economic challenges that the country has faced over the last couple of years”, Mike Kruiniger, an Associate Director, Country Risk at Fitch Solutions, stated.
Discussing this survey during Friday’s “Kokrokoo” show on Peace FM, Professor Smart Sarpong found nothing really “unique” about Fitch Solutions’ findings.
“As for NDC likely to win, you don’t even need a research to say that. What would be strange is if somebody says maybe Ghana Freedom Movement is likely to win…The same way if any study comes and say NPP is likely to win, how’s this one discovery?”, he said.
To him, he doesn’t disprove Fitch Solutions’ findings but the nation’ needs to break their over-reliance and strong belief in foreign researches over those conducted by Ghanaian research institutions.
“Let’s not over-depend on them because sometimes, you see geopolitics is such that everyone and his interest even over your country”, he emphasized and appealed for support saying “let’s strengthen our local research institutions”.
