Obuasi Mine Deaths: Don’t Ever Confront A Soldier Holding A Gun – Ghanaian Youth Told

NPP stalwart, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has urged the youth, particularly illegal miners (galamseyers), to act responsibly and resist any urge to engage in violent confrontation with law enforcers.

Boakye Agyarko, commenting on the AngloGold Ashanti shooting incident at Obuasi, wished there were no casualties, however, to him, the soldiers are not to blame.

Eight persons were shot dead by military personnel protecting AngloGold Ashanti after some illegal miners, reportedly NDC supporters, thronged the company’s mine shaft demanding a portion of the gold in the mining site but were met with fierce resistance.

The confrontations resulted in deaths and serious injuries.

Tackling the matter during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” panel discussion show, Boakye Agyarko advised the youth not to ever attempt to confront a law enforcement agent, stressing aside it being a serious offence against the State, it could also result in loss of life.

“When one meets a soldier, whether he holds a gun or not, understand that he/she is an agent of the State and the State has assigned him/her to execute a task. Even if a soldier or Police officer in uniform offends you, there is a lawful way to address the matter but if you take the laws in your hands, you have equally committed an offence”, he remarked.
