Obuasi Mine Deaths: Help Victims And Bereaved Families Out Of Goodwill, Not Pressure – Nana Akomea To AngloGold Ashanti
Nana Akomea has pleaded with the management of AngloGold Ashanti to financially support the victims of the shooting incident at the company.
Some illegal miners believed to be supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) had, over the weekend, trespassed the AngloGold’s mine shaft.
The invaders were confronted by some military personnel guarding the facility but it turned violent with some persons losing their lives and others sustaining gunshot injuries.
About eight persons were reportedly killed as a result of a shootout involving the Military.
As a result, the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama has called for investigation into the incident and also instructed AngloGold Ashanti to “bear the medical expenses of the injured individuals fully” and “to facilitate the burial arrangements” of the deceased.
But Nana Akomea, Chief Executive of the InterCity State Transport Corporation (STC), finds the President’s request for AngloGold to bear the financial cost as not an appropriate approach as to him the government is pressuring the company.
To him, the company should rather help the victims and bereaved families out of goodwill, not pressure.
“I plead with the company to out of goodwill assist the families”, he said on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show Tuesday morning.
