Our National Pledge Is ‘Gender Insensitive’ – Adwoa Safo Calls For Review

Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo has called for a review of Ghana’s national pledge.

According to her, the pledge is “gender insensitivity” in that it fails to acknowledge the struggles of women for the nation.

Quoting the portion of the pledge that says “I promise to hold in high esteem our heritage, won for us through the blood and toil of our fathers”, lawyer Adwoa Safo called the attention of the Speaker of Parliament to the need for the pledge to suit women recognizing the toils of mothers as well.

“It talks about the toil, through the blood and toil of our fathers. Mr. Speaker, it omits mothers. Mr. Speaker, the mothers also toiled for this country. Mr. Speaker, I think that it is gender insensitive. This country, when we are even making reference to the country, we call it our motherland but when it comes to the pledge and we are referring to the toil and we are referring to the fight, the struggles, we omit that of our mothers…We have to look at it again as a country”, she said on the floor of Parliament.
