Removing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo Doesn’t Mean You’ll Win Every Case In Court – Prof. Smart Sarpong To NDC

Professor Smart Sarpong, Research Fellow at the Kumasi Technical University, has questioned the motive of some National Democratic Congress’ supporters behind their calls for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

President John Mahama has commenced consultations with the Council of State in line with Article 146 of the Constitution to set up a committee to look into three petitions insisting the Chief Justice must be dismissed.

The President has also given the Chief Justice 10 days to respond to the petitions.

Prof. Smart Sarpong, discussing the issue on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, found it ridiculous and reprehensible the widely held criticisms that the Chief Justice remaining in office means the Mahama government will lose their cases in court.

“If she goes, a Justice or Judge of her calibre will be appointed to replace her…Are you telling me that you are bringing the new Justice so that all cases, good or bad, legit or illegit, hardcore evidence or not, you will win it all? The State will then become a banana State”, he expressed his disappointment.

He advised the Mahama administration not to infuse politics into the Judiciary stessing such conduct will be injurious to Ghana’s democracy.

“Change the Chief Justice today and still if your case is weak or doesn’t have strong evidence, you may still not make it in court”, he told host Akwasi Aboagye.
