Sidelining Us Has Hindered Galamsey Fight – E/R Chiefs Complain Bitterly
Members of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs led by their President and Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, have pledged their support and readiness to help combat illegal mining, particularly in the Eastern Region.
Speaking at the first engagement between the Eastern Regional Minister and the 11 Paramount Chiefs of the Region, the Chiefs did not mince words in attributing the failure of the fight against galamsey to the exclusion of Paramount Chiefs from the process.
Nene Sakite II emphasized that the role of Paramount Chiefs is crucial and cannot be underestimated in addressing national issues such as illegal mining.
He urged the government to recognize the Chiefs’ significant contributions as custodians of the land and actively involve them in the fight against galamsey to ensure success.
On behalf of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, the Chiefs pledged their full support for the government’s efforts to curb illegal mining if they are formally engaged in the initiative.
Several Paramount Chiefs including Odeneho Kwarfo Akoto (Akwamuhene), Osabarima Adusei Piasa, Akyem Tafohene (representing Okyenhene), and Nana Okusiako Brempong Kumi Sasraku VIII (Paramount Chief of Anum Traditional Area) also echoed the call for their inclusion in this fight.
Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Adjei Awatey acknowledged the importance of engaging the Chiefs in the governance system.
Emphasizing government’s dedication to strengthening partnerships with the various paramountcies, she assured the Chiefs of her office’s commitment to collaborating closely with traditional authorities to promote development.
