Tell Your Team To Burn All Excavators If You Really Want To Stop Galamsey – Charles Owusu To Mahama
Charles Owusu has dissented to President John Mahama’s directive to the anti-galamsey team to confiscate excavators rather than destroy them.
The President emphasized the need for a structured approach that balances enforcement with sustainable mining practices.
He said this after members of the Christian Council visited him at the Jubilee House on Friday, February 21.
“I’ve told them not to burn the excavators. They should confiscate them”, President Mahama stated.
But to Charles Owusu, the excavators should be burned.
Speaking on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, the former Head of Monitoring Unit at the Forestry Commission explained that burning the machines is one of the surest ways to discourage the galamseyers and help to restore the polluted water bodies and environment.
According to him, confiscating the machines doesn’t mean the galamseyers cannot regain access to them to advance their illegal mining purposes.
He therefore appealed to the President to redirect the team saying “if we indeed want to fight against the illegal galamsey, then we must burn the machines…If we don’t use this method, it will be difficult for the Forestry Commission together with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to fight against galamsey in order to restore our polluted water bodies and lands”.
