Today Is A Sad ‘Disgraceful’ Day For Ghana – Opanyin Agyekum Blasts MPs

Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly called “Opanyin Agyekum”, has expressed disappointment in the Members of Parliament over their conduct in these last days to elections.

The Majority and Minority are currently on each other’s throat following the Speaker declaring some seats in Parliament vacant.

The Minority has assumed majority and refused to retrun to their chamber despite a Supreme Court ruling which has stayed the Speaker’s ruling.

Tuesday, October 22, would have turned chaotic in the House if the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in Parliament had contested the Minority who had already occupied their seats as majority.

The NPP boycotted their chamber for peace to prevail.

In view of the current situation in Parliament, the Speaker has adjourned the House indefinitely.

“We don’t have at least half of all members of parliament present. Consequently, in view of the current circumstances, the fact that there’s a question on the composition and constitution of Parliament, and having regard to public interest and the exigencies of the state of affairs in Parliament, I will proceed to, in accordance with Standing Orders 59, adjourn the House indefinitely”, Speaker, Alban Bagbin said.

Joining a panel discussion on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Opanyin Agyekum found the conduct of the MPs very disturbing, particularly as the nation gears up for the December 7 elections.

He wondered why the MPs would play such political games in this volatile electioneering year.

To Opanyin Agyekum, “today is a sad day for me. It is also a day of disgrace for Ghana”.

The Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana called on the Peace Council to intervene by meeting the Speaker and the leaders of both sides of the House to ensure peace and orderliness.
