We Apologize For Taking Your Money But… – NAPO To DDEP Bondholders

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has apologized to DDEP bondholders on behalf of the New Patriotic Party.

It could be recalled that as part of the government’s debt restructuring programme, some Ghanaian bondholders had to risk their investments as the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, sacrificed them for Ghana’s economic recovery.

This resulted in a series of protests which included a former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, warning the government not to touch their investments.

After reviewing the programme, pensioners were excluded but other bondholders had to forfeit their hard earnings.

Commenting on the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) during an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Dr. Matthew Opoku Premphe, NPP Vice Presidential Candidate, eulogized the bondholders for stepping in to salvage Ghana’s economy.

“DDEP bondholders rescued Ghana in our times of stress”, he stated, exclaiming Ghana would have been in a worse situation without them.

He however extended the apologies of the NPP to the bondholders and promised the Bawumia administration will follow through with the plan to restore them.

He therefore urged them to elect Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stressing “it is only Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who can bring succour and relief to DDEP”.

“First, on behalf of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on behalf of NPP, we apologize to the DDEP bondholders that for their pain and hardship, they should see it an ultimate sacrifice for Ghana…Whatever we have given DDEP, we have start looking at improving it for their satisfaction”, he emphasized.
