We Need The Anti-LGBTQ Bill Now! – Mahama Told

Former Deputy Education Minister, John Ntim Fordjour says the anti-LGBTQ bill has been re-laid before Parliament.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, John Ntim Fordjour, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Assin South constituency and a Pastor, disclosed that the bill was taken back to the House of Legislature on February 25 to start again the process of passing it into law.

He revealed this in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s assertion that the bill expired with the previous Parliament.

“…as far as I know, the bill did not get to the President for assent and so, the convention is that all bills that are not ascended to before the expiration of the life of Parliament expire. And so that bill effectively is dead, it has expired.”

“I don’t know what the promoters of the bill intend to do but I do think that we should have on it again so that all of us, if we decide to move that bill forward, we move it forward with a consensus and probably it shouldn’t be a Private Member’s Bill; it probably should be a government bill with government behind it after consultation with all the stakeholders…”, the President said when some Bishops paid him a courtesy call in Accra.

On whether or not he will sign the bill, President Mahama answered; “If we are teaching our values in school, we won’t need to pass a bill to enforce our family values. That’s why I think more than even the Family Values Bill is us agreed on a curriculum that inculcates these values into our children as they are growing up so that we don’t need to legislate it.

Rev. Ntim Fordjour, in his remarks, reminded the President of his promise prior to the 2024 elections that he would sign the bill, stressing he believes now that it has been submitted to Parliament again, the President will honor his word.

He explained that about 93 percent of Ghanaians are in favor of the bill, hence “the bill is needed now. Every person must continue to support this bill”.
